Major Multi-Taskers

Growing up playing sports I quickly learned the team did better when we were…well a team. All these years later that childhood lesson has come to serve me and the team I work with very well.

See Multimedia Content Coordinators are big multi-taskers. We have a lot of people, information and facts to keep up with on a daily basis. Our shifts overlap and one person is sometimes taken out of the loop. No matter what, the news still comes on at the same time everyday and we have to be at the top of our game everyday. Producers, reports, photographers and everyone else in the newsroom needs the core to always be game on.

Remember the scene from Wayne’s World and they are trying to play hockey in the street. Every time a car came down the street they had to move…Game Off! When the car was gone Game On! Everyday in news is Game On no matter what and the team has to keep moving to score the big goal.

Jason has been taken out of the blog loop today to work on other projects so the team work kicks in. To the viewer and to those in the newsroom the goal is to keep working as a team and be ready to do it all over again with as much energy and efficiency as yesterday.

Through The Eyes Of An Intern

Today is an exciting day, not only because it’s sunny out but because today is the first day of the summer internship program.

Every semester, NBC17 hosts about a dozen news interns. Over the course of the semester they learn about the various aspects needed for a broadcast to be successful.

This semester, we have our very first web intern. She will be working in our interactive unit to learn all about NBC17.com. I decided that it may be interesting to hear about what the very first day was like for our web intern. I will let her tell you in her own words. Her name is Michele. Here is what she writes:

First, I would like to say welcome to the wonderful somewhat exciting life of an intern at NBC17. My name is Michele and it is my first day as a web production intern. A little about me: I am an Atlanta native and a rising junior at Hampton University which I lovingly refer to as my “home by the sea.” I’m a broadcast journalism major, but at age 20, I still have close to no clue where I want to go with my career. I want to do something in media, but you never know. Now a synopsis of my day.

After navigating through traffic from my residence in Wake Forest, I arrived at work at 8 a.m. I will admit that I had a serious case of nerves, but that was swept aside with relative speed and ease. Working as a web intern is a new front for me. Although some have hinted that it is a little uneventful, I find it interesting. Sure I spent pretty much the whole day looking over someone elses shoulder, but how else am I supposed to learn?

I love technology so I hope to learn a lot during my time here. If not anything else, I think I’ll benefit from experiencing a real news room. Around 4 o’clock I was snagged to write this blog, which has probably become the most interesting point of my day. At 5, I’ll leave, but I will return again at 8 to do it all again.

Happy Mother’s Day

Have you spoken to your mother today? Have you told her how much you love her? You should, because today is Mother’s Day.

In the beginning, she held you before you could walk. She comforted you when you cried. She fed you when you were hungry but still unable to talk.

She held your hands as you went off to school for the very first time.  At the end of the day, she’d tuck you into bed like only mothers know how to do. She filled your lunchbox with goodies and picked out your clothes for the next day of school.

She watched as you matured, growing up so fast that sometimes she just took a step back and watched you for a few minutes. Before she knew it, she was at your high school graduation.

She is the one you leaned on when college was making you homesick. She continued to steer you down the appropriate paths, in life. She cherishes the visits home to see her and the holiday meals spent together, as a family.

At the end of every day, she’d rest her eyes for a few hours before getting up and doing it all over again. She did all of the things she did, for you.

Through the years, they have inspired, motivated, supported and instilled nothing but the best qualities in us. It is for all their sacrifices that this day is truly a day for them. For their hard work, dedication and undying love, this is a day to give back to our mother…for raising us into the people we are today.

How do you tell your mother thank you for so much? Can a simply present ever capture the true magnitude of your gratefulness? If you had to write your mother a letter for Mother’s Day, what would you say?

I welcome your thoughts and comments!

We Make Up Words

One of the first things I had to learn in this business is that we tend to make up words.

One of the most widely used made-up words is “efforting,” We use this word when we are trying to get a specific piece of video or sound. Often times I’ll say to my producer, we are efforting video of the scene. In short, we are trying to get it.

Another term we don’t use properly is “spray.” Ask any photographer and they will tell you the desk loves this word. We use this word when we are asking a photographer to grab a few quick shots of video. We are looking for literally a minute of video and that’s it. As such, the desk will ask the photographer to go spray video of a particular house or place.

Finally, there is “mos.” No, this is not the green fungus that grows in your yard. This is what we refer to as “man on the street.” We use this term to describe the type of interviews we may be looking for on that particular day, story or topic. In short, it means to talk to people out and about (not necessarily on the street) and certainly not in the street.

There are other words we make up but I will save those for a rainy day.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’ll see you back here on Monday!

Price At the Pump

Everytime the price at the pump climbs higher, news stations seem to kick the “Pump Patrol” into high gear.

Last night, we spoke to triangle cab drivers about the pain they are feeling at the pump as prices continue to rise, every day.

Why is gas so expensive?  Some speculate that the spike may be short-lived. Others bank on bills being introduced as a means of capping or cutting the gas tax. And, my favorite is the plan to boycott gas stations for a day. So what happens the very next day when everyone goes to the gas station to fill up? Exactly!

The reality is that with the price of gas constantly climbing over the past few years, I think tv stations have run out ways to tell the story over and over and over again.

Go ahead...Calculate your gas costs here.
Learn ten ways to save gas here.

So does the price at the pump worry you? At what point will the price of gas really alter the way you live and drive?
