All the details for this FREE event are here.
This will be my fourth year volunteering for this event. I am always amazed at the sheer number of people who come out and take advantage of the free health tests and information that is offered. Each year the event gets bigger and better.

Just moments ago, Superior Court Judge Howard Manning, Jr. ruled year-round schedules for schools must be voluntary, in Wake County.
Today’s announcement is a victory for the group, Wake Cares, an advocacy group who fought the school board on mandatory year-round schedules.
This story has generated debate, frustration and emotion from the very beginning. There is even an online petition that was started as a grass-roots effort to drum up support for the fight against mandatory year-round schedules.
This is a story we broke on our website, NBC17.com. I encourage you to join us at 6pm and 7pm for both sides on this story.
Continuing coverage here.
Are you a parent who has been forced to put your kids on a year-round calendar? Do you have children impacted by today’s announcement?
If so, we’d welcome the chance to speak to you. Feel free to email me directly.
Local blogger reaction here.

From time to time, we receive emails from viewers frustrated by our anchors mispronouncing Sergio Quintana’s first name.
If you have ever heard Sergio sign off from a liveshot, you will know that he pronounces his first name Sir-hee-o. Moments later, the anchors on the newsdesk say something like “Thank you, [insert reporter name here].” When they do that, they usually pronounce his name Sir-Gee-o. Some viewers have taken note of that and expressed frustration that our anchors do not pronounce his name the same way he does.
There is no one better to answer that than Sergio, himself. Below is an emailed response that he wrote to one of our viewers.

To: Viewer
Subject: What’s in a Name?
Dear Viewer,
First let me start by thanking you for not only tuning in to our newscasts… but also paying close attention to the details. As a reporter you have no idea how gratifying it is to know that people notice what we’re doing.
I wanted to respond to the e-mail you wrote a few days ago about my name. That has been one of the most interesting conversations I’ve had in each news team I’ve had the privilege of being part of through the duration of my broadcast career.
Interesting because it immediately confronts the diversity we share when we all work together to understand our differences. I can assure you that all of my colleagues to not take the proper pronunciation of my name lightly.
Early on in my career I realized the difficulty my first name poses to non native Spanish speakers. Rolling an “r” and then pronouncing a hard Spanish “g” is not the easiest thing to do on the air. I tried conducting phonetics lessons with my anchors in prior newsrooms.
But then I realized, I do not live in a Spanish society. Nor do I live in an English only society. I live in a Bi-lingual society. With that… I feel people can understand and appreciate MY heritage through MY proper pronunciation of MY own name. But I can’t always expect everyone I work with to master Spanish immediately.
So, my anchor team and fellow reporters operate on a simple rule; pronounce my name correctly in either English or Spanish… as opposed to mispronouncing it in both.
My sincerest thanks for you note,
Sergio Quintana
Reporter

Every once in a while I find myself surfing the web and coming across something that peeks my attention.
I must say I am interested in this Capre website.
Judging by the site, it appears this is a new project that is starting up. I’ll be monitoring.

I wanted to share some of the comments you, are viewers, sent to us after the airing of our immigration debate stories.
Reaction Text : Why should Sheriff Bizzell be allowed to make such observations, when Don Imus is reprimanded for making similarly racist comments? We should not allow stereotypes to be taken factually, since the stereotypes, that I do not personally advance, speak very negatively of Mr. Bizzell’s county. Maybe we should take some time to learn of other people’s lives and cultures before passing judgment and enhancing thoughtless ideology.
Reaction Text: Maybe Sheriff Steve Bizzell and Sheriff Donnie Harrison should tell the fed that these prisoners are terrorist suspect, maybe then they will listen. Also maybe the sheriffs shoul contact the NY police dept. I know that they deport immigrants that break other laws (not the law of being here illegally). Laws like stealing, drugs possesion, domestic violance, etc.
Reaction Text : In regard to the ignorant comments that Steve Bizzell made earlier today, it is without hesitation that I may call him an ignorant pig. Not all immigrants are Hispanics; and not all Hispanics are Mexicans. It is rude and offensive for him to make such derogatory comments. As a public figure and leader of his community, he ought to be more conscious about the words he chooses to use. Comparing immigrants, and more specifically Mexicans, to cows does not seem, but is rather, rude and uneducated.
Reaction Text: Your so much advertised news story about the cost of immigration in NC was such a fiasco. I was expecting a “special report” in depth about it you barely addressed the really issues. It lacked balance. To really address the issue you need to look at both sides. Th true costs to the State and the benefits/tax contributions by undocumented immigrants.
Reaction Text : Could you avoid airing racist opinions by local authorities (Sheriff Steve Bizzell) that just feed the prejudice and ignorance of North Carolinians. Not all Mexicans are illegal and not all the illegals immigrants are from Mexico. I look forward to see more news addressing immigration issues and I hope you can do a better job researching and documenting, as well as showing balance.
Keep your comments and feedback coming!
Jason
