Friday Night Lights

All the trappings of fall are in the air…back to school sales are everywhere, school supply lists are must, and football is back!

Fall is a great time of year and couldn’t be more fun. No matter where you look you see football, tailgates and old friends. It doesn’t matter who you cheer for but you know a good game is your future. I know I have a game I have been looking forward to all year. I can’t wait to cheer on my team.

Last week we started Friday Night Lights here at NBC 17 @ 11. It takes a team of people to get something like this on the air and part of the team is you the viewer. If you go a high school football game call us with the score 919-835-6399. If you know about really good match-up let us know in advance .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Be sure to watch Penn and the entire sports team every week for the best hits, plays and touchdowns of the day. Good luck to all the teams and have a great season.

Got Camera? Will Shoot

Last night, I was driving out to one of our monthly listening tour meetings, in Chatham County. On my way out, we ran into some storm cells passing through the area. We didn’t have a photographer in the area. What did we do? I’ll turn it over to Teran, Community Content Liason to tell you the story….image

Thunder crashing… lightning flashing… rain pouring and wind howling…that was our Tuesday night in Chatham County! Team NBC 17 made a stop on our Listening Tour in Pittsboro last night for a Community Focus Forum. In the midst of setting up and getting ready for the forum, a much needed summer storm was forming and coming at us hard!  Sure enough the storm blew through the entire Triangle with a force that was not to be reckoned with.

As we were about to start the meeting, we got a call from Wes Hohenstein NBC 17’s Chief Meteorologist saying a tree had fallen on a house in Pittsboro and we needed to get pictures and video of it but did not have a reporter to go down there. The news crew knew we were there, so low and behold I headed out with my camera phone and handheld camera to find this house. As I was driving down the street looking for this house, there was no tree to be found. I called the NBC 17 assignment desk to check the address again, and as I pulled up in front of the house I was greeted by Catherine the owner of the house and her neighbor. Catherine was frazzled, but still very nice and invited me into her home to show me where a branch had gone all the way through her roof/ceiling into her bathroom.  Then she took me to the backyard to see the tree on top of the house. I took some pictures on my cell phone and immediately e-mailed them back to the station.  I then shot some video on my handheld camera. I got back in my car and drove back to the station where they were able to edit my footage and get it onto the 11 o’clock news. Keep in mind, I am neither a journalist nor a photographer.  I am a just a girl with a camera, and by having my position of Community Content Liaison, I was able to be out in the community where something like this happened! A special thanks to Erin who got me to where I needed to be, and Brad and Monty who were able to edit my footage and get it on air!

Also a thank you to the Chatham County residents who braved the storm and came to our forum: Gabriel, Ilana, Claudia, Patti, Sheila, Michael, Jeanette, Joan, Sterlin, Norma, Carol, Bill, Pam, Andrea, Vance, Dianne, Neha, Molly, Gilda, Loyse, Melissa, and Rita! We look forward to meeting more of you on one of our stops during the NBC 17 Listening Tour…coming to a town near you!

Thank You To My Staff

Chance are you didn’t know I spent much of the past week taking in the sun on the shores of North Carolina.

The reason you may not have realized I was gone is because I work with some truly amazing assignment editors  multimedia content coordinators.

The desk is really the epicenter for all news gathering and content dissemination. It’s the heartbeat of the newsroom. Everyday and every night, Monica, Erin, Dominique and Saundra work feverishly to get the latest news and information. They dig for stories in places I can only imagine.

I was once told that a manager’s dream is to be able to go on vacation or to a day long meeting and leave his/her staff to do the jobs they do best without worrying about a thing. I can truly say I didn’t worry for one second. Why? Because they are first and foremost a team, and they are driven to succeed.  They come in early. They stay late. They dig for information. In short, they do what it takes.

I have never been a person hung up on titles. There are people with big long titles and who need to flaunt it. I don’t. Instead, I like to think of myself as a part of the team rather than as the manager.

I couldn’t be any prouder of them. And to them I say, Thank you!

Think I should buy them all dinner? What should I buy them?

You’ve Been Paged

We have a new face on our website. Her name is Page. If you are an avid watcher of our webcasts ( which I know you all are) - than you’ve probably already seen her.

Anyways, my chief weather guy stole my thunder by posting about Page while I was on vacation. Here’s what he had to say.
