Beyond The Headlines

Growing up in the Chicagoland area, television news has always been a daily part of my life. Although of course a majority of the stories were negative, or as some say “bad news”, I still would eagerly turn on the tube at 4pm to see what was happening in the world around me. Fast forward several years later and I was now not only an eager viewer excited to watch the news, but also a part time employee at NBC5 Chicago.

I no longer had to wait until late afternoon to find out what the lead story was going to be. I now saw the headlines being created from start to finish. I was taught very quickly if you want to succeed in this business you must have a thick skin. Meaning we in the newsroom see and hear some very disturbing things on a daily basis. Sexual assaults, gang violence, robberies, child abuse, all of these things and more came across our e-mails every hour on the hour in Chicago.

Needless to say, moving to Raleigh was a breath of fresh news air for me. Of course no place is perfect, and we have our fair share of not so good news down here as well, I mean every place does right?

I honestly believe I’ve seen and heard some of the most heart wrenching and chilling news stories ever, but not one has ever affected and touched me as Eve Carson’s story has. As I was searching the internet last week for anything Eve related, I was simply amazed at what a remarkable person she was. What a senseless crime. My heart truly goes out to her family and friends. We can all learn a thing or two from Eve’s life, and that is to make the best of it and leave your mark on this world.

Best Wishes,
Dominique
