“Draft Day” Is Here
Remember, this is just a draft plan. Comments can be made via the website or e-mail between now and the end of the year. Chuck Dulaney did mention that if you want to have a “major” change considered you’ll need to get your response in by next Friday December 14.
The timeline for the Student Assignment Plan looks something like this:
-December 2007 - Make comments online regarding the Draft Plan
-Early January 2008 - Staff will make recommendations to the Board of Education as to what they feel the final Assignment Plan should be. (this will be made public and will possibly incorporate changes to the draft based on comments they received after releasing the draft on December 7)
-January 2008 - A series of Public Forums will be held to allow families to voice any concerns or comments on the plan presented to the Board of Education
-February 2008 - Board of Education will vote to adopt the final 2008-09 Assignment Plan
As curious as I have been to see how the draft plan affects my family, I would like to hear what has been happening around the county. How does the draft affect your current situation? What changes will you suggest?

Looks like my node became a spot node with regards to the traditional calendar middle school option. All of the other nodes in my development were given a traditional calendar option middle school as Davis Drive, while my node was given Dillard Drive Middle as it’s optional middle school. I guess we were punished. I know this is only a proposal, but something tells me that my node was purposely punished due to my being so outspoken against growth management. What a shame. Don’t they realize they are punishing the kids. Gee Whiz.

I’m not a parent, but I do have a suggestion going forward… How about requiring proportionate mixed-income housing prices in new residential developments?...say 20% Upper income/60% Middle Income/20% Lower Income.
I went to high school in Lexington, KY and they bused in inner-city kids out to the other schools -which understandably created student frustration as these kids had to be on the bus an hour earlier in the morning(sometimes more)- when their local school was more convenient. Diversity is wonderful but I personally would hate not having the choice by being a Minority and considered a statistic - and lets not forget our own days of youth where the majority of students electively broke into their own socio-economic & racial clique’s.

Stacy,
You really do have a point but wouldn’t controling the diversity of a subdivision just be even more micro managing by the school system or even the county for that matter?
I live in the “affordable housing” area of south eastern Wake county. I love it out here. We have land to spread out on and our neighbors are all very special people. We just in the last couple of years have seen an increase in more expensive housing with a trailer park being shut down up the road from us so they can build $300,000 homes with 3/4 acre of land. The builders are not in it for diversity they are in it for the money. If you can afford these homes then welcome, otherwise don’t bother. Builders try to mantain a certain “look” if you will in each developement and placing a $300,000 next to a $150,000 home would be difficult for them to do.
But you do make a good point.

The board’s actions followed a lengthy community discussion that included two board work sessions and three public hearings that drew more than 170 speakers, a public comment period on a draft proposal that resulted in more than 1,500 comments and a series of three community engagement meetings held across the county last fall.
